Do you know how many calories are in a glass of wine?

By some incomprehensible and cruel divine design, many of the things that make us happy in life also make us fat. A few years ago, nobody thought about how many calories were in the food they ate. Today, we have the information we need to know how much energy each nutrient in our diet will provide. And with that information available, it makes sense to try to take care of ourselves.

Wine, as a foodstuff, contains nutrients. And although it may weigh on us, it also represents a calorie intake that must be taken into account when assessing our daily calorie intake. Therefore, it is important that we know the calories contained in a glass of wine, so that we know how its consumption affects our calorie balance.

According to the UNED Food and Health Guide, the recommended daily calorie intake is:

2,200 kcal for women between 25 and 50 years of age. Taking as a reference average a female model 163 centimetres tall and weighing 63 kilograms.
2,900 kcal for men between 25 and 50 years of age. Taking as a reference average a male model of 176 centimetres in height and 79 kilograms in weight.

Now that we know how many calories we should not exceed in our daily dietary intake, we only need to know how many calories a glass of wine provides us with in order to take it into account when planning our diet.

HOW IT IS CALCULATED

The energy, i.e. calorie, content of wine is defined by its alcohol content. Therefore, the number of calories provided will vary according to the type of wine, the variety of grapes used to make it, the length of maturation, etc.

To understand how to calculate the calorie content of wine, we will use an example:

Vivanco Crianza

Let's imagine a red wine Vivanco Crianza with an alcohol volume of 13.5%. If a 75 cl (750 ml) bottle of wine is enough for approximately 7-8 glasses of wine, the average content of a glass is 750 ml/ 7.5 = 100 ml.

Of these 100 ml of wine, 13.5% is alcohol, more specifically ethanol. 13.5% of 100 ml is: 13.5 ml. The density of ethanol is 0.8 grams per millilitre.

This means that a volume of one millilitre of alcohol will weigh 0.8 grams. So 13.5 ml will weigh: 13.5 ml x 0.8 grams/ml = 10.8 grams.

To recap: a glass of wine with an alcohol content of 13.5% and a volume of 100 ml contains 10.8 grams of alcohol. Knowing that each gram of alcohol provides 7 kcal of energy: 10.8 gr X 7 kcal/gram = 75.6 kcal.

Our glass of wine would give us an energy intake of 75.6 kcal in this particular case. This amount would represent approximately 3.44% of the daily calorie intake in a woman's diet and approximately 2.6% in a man's diet .

Similarly, applying the same calculation, we could conclude that a glass of white wine Vivanco Viura-Malvasía-Tempranillo with an alcohol volume of 12.5% will provide 70 kcal, or that a glass of rosé wine Vivanco Tempranillo-Garnacha with an alcohol volume of 13.5% will provide our diet with 75.6 kcal.

CALORIE INTAKE IN OUR DAILY LIVES

In order to see more clearly how much these caloric contributions amount to, we can compare them with those of other alcoholic beverages and foodstuffs:

  • One apple -> 52 kcal
  • Glass of white wine Vivanco Viura-Malvasía-Tempranillo (100 ml) -> 70 kcal
  • Glass of red wine Vivanco Crianza (100 ml) -> 75,6 kcal
  • Glass of rosé wine Vivanco Tempranillo-Garnacha (100 ml) -> 75,6 kcal
  • Natural yoghurt (100 gr) -> 82 kcal
  • One boiled egg -> 147 kcal
  • One beer (330 ml) -> 150 kcal
  • A combination of rum (25 ml) with cola (250 ml)-> 176 kcal
  • White wheat bread (100 gr) -> 255 kcal
  • White rice (100 gr) -> 354 kcals
  • Manchego cheese (100 gr) -> 376 kcal
  • Milk chocolate (100 gr) -> 550 kcals

Does this mean that wine is fattening? Well, yes and no. Everything we eat, with the exception of water, has an energy intake. If at the end of the day we do not compensate for the calories we have ingested with those we have expended, the excess nutrients will accumulate in our body in the form of fat. However, in the case of wine, unlike other alcoholic beverages, we are not talking about "empty" calories, or calories without nutritional contribution. Wine contains, in addition to alcohol, many other nutrients such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron or vitamin B6.

Furthermore, according to the World Health Organisation, wine contains resveratrol, a powerful natural antioxidant that comes from grapes and helps to synthesise HDL cholesterol(High Density Lipoprotein), which we know as "good" cholesterol, and to reduce the levels of LDL cholesterol(Low Density Lipoprotein) or "bad" cholesterol. Therefore, we can say that a moderate consumption of wine helps to reduce the level of fats in our organism.

In any case, as with all the gastronomic pleasures within our reach, moderation is the key. So it is essential to be well informed in order to know the exact amount of calories we are consuming. And to make this task easier, at Vivanco we provide you with a list of the calorie content of each of our wines:

  1. Heredad Vivanco de villamediana y Briones la Rioja.an out of the ordinary, quality taste, good professionals.and great quality wines.

  2. Either in Asturias we are a bit exaggerated or in La Rioja you are a bit meagre, a bottle of wine is enough for at most 6 glasses, 5 being a bit generous. This implies, at least in the Principality, about 100 kilocalories per glass of Rioja. So, instead of drinking 4, you drink 3 and that's it. Thank you very much for the information, I have ordered one of your wines to celebrate because I thought there were many more.

  3. Thank you for the information, I had no idea about the calories in wine, but I do know about your magnificent cellars, splendid museum and your wonderful wine. A toast!
