Accessible tourism in Spain: recommended routes

Cities, hotels, itineraries and tourism in general are becoming more and more accessible for those who live with a disability. For years, this sector has been working hard to ensure that reduced mobility is not a handicap for those who want to go on an excursion or spend their holidays like everyone else.

In some cities, more and more work is being done to make them fully accessible for the disabled. Museums adapted for the blind, barrier-free hotels or accessible beaches are some of the measures that have been taken to make tourism accessible to all.

Nature is also being adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility. To this end, several hiking trails have been developed hiking routes which can be done in wheelchairs or which can be followed, under the supervision of a guide, by the visually impaired.

Here are some of them:

La Jara Route (Toledo)

One of the most spectacular hiking routes adapted for the disabled is the Jara route, in the province of Toledo, which goes from the banks of the Tagus to the Sierra de Altamira. It passes through tunnels, viaducts and abandoned railway stations.

The entire route is fifty kilometres long and there is a stretch of 20 kilometres that is fully adapted for both wheelchairs and handbikes.

Route along the Bear Greenway (Asturias)

Another recommended itinerary for people with reduced mobility is the route along the Bear Greenway, one of the oldest in Spain.

On this itinerary, which invites you on a journey through the essence of the most natural Asturias, you can enjoy tunnels carved into the rock, rugged gorges and beautiful landscapes. The route is fully adapted for wheelchairs, except for specific limitations.

Route through the Linza Valley (Huesca)

On the other hand, the excursion to the Linza Valley in Huesca is another of the itineraries that can be done by wheelchair users. This trail, which starts in a pasture area and ends in a beech forest, is also notable for its rest areas with adapted tables.

Carrilet Greenway (Girona)

In the province of Girona there are also several hiking routes adapted for people with reduced mobility that not only pass through beautiful landscapes but also through urban centres that have been fully adapted for this type of tourist. One of these routes is the excursion along the Carrilet I Greenway, which runs between Olot and Girona. Along the 50-kilometre route you can see places of great ecological importance, as well as some monuments such as the castle of Hostels or the small villages of Anglès and Sant Feliu de Pallerols.

Jurassic Route of Préjano (La Rioja)

In La Rioja there are also several fully adapted trails such as the Jurassic route of Préjano, a five-kilometre extension of the Cidacos greenway that also stands out for its high scenic and historical value. It starts in Arnedillo and ends in the town of Préjano.

People with reduced mobility or with any kind of disability who come to La Rioja soon, cannot miss the opportunity to visit the "Best Wine Museum in the World" (awarded by UNWTO) and its winery, rated as one of the best according to the magazine "Wine&Spirits". approaching Vivanco where they will be able to visit the "Best Wine Museum in the World" (awarded by the UNWTO) and its winery, rated as one of the best according to the magazine "Wine&Spirits". Wine&Spirits in 2015.

In Vivanco, they offer the possibility of accessible tourism at all levels, as anyone can enjoy all its nooks and crannies without any problem.

In case you didn't know, all the facilities at Vivanco are adapted for people with reduced mobility, visual impairments, etc. They have, for example, ramps for wheelchair access, different textures on the floor to facilitate the route for blind people and the indications of the works housed in the Museum of Wine Culture can be found written in Braille alphabet. In 2014, Vivanco and ONCE signed an agreement for the adaptability of the Museum for blind people, extending new agreements years later with other organisations such as PREDIF, development of accessible tourism, and ASPRODEMA, promoting employment among people with disabilities.

In short, "Wine Culture accessible to all".
