This is how the 2022 vintage was
Heat, little water and vineyard resilience. These are the main characteristics of the 2022 vintage. Above all, due to the first factor, with very high average temperatures, more than a degree higher than the previous vintage, and with a first heatwave at the beginning of June, the second week, unseen before at that time of year, with temperatures above 40°C. Brutal. The vine defended itself well, protecting itself, limiting its activity, showing better adaptation in vineyards with organic viticulture, as is our case. Vineyard operations were minimal, keeping as many leaves as possible around the bunches to keep them as exposed to the sun as possible. Water, just enough, with very little influence from diseases such as downy mildew and powdery mildew. The harvest was brought forward by two weeks, with exceptional fruit quality, sweeter but mature tannins. The challenge was to achieve balance, in an almost constant battle against climate change. The wine offers this and clearly shows it.
BRIONES, The landscape
BRIONES is located in the heart of the Rioja Alta, at an altitude of 502 metres above sea level. Within its perimeter, a total of 1,400 hectares of vineyards are cultivated under the DOCa Rioja. This places it among the municipalities with the longest winemaking tradition in the area. Its climatic influences are predominantly Atlantic, with harvest dates around the first week of October.
With variable soils, the stony and light soils, close to the Ebro River, coexist with the more calcareous clayey soils of the southern area. A terroir of great quality, extremely suitable for the cultivation of Tempranillo and shorter-cycle varieties such as Maturana Tinta.
